Bordeaux rolls out fleet of shared e-scooters
Superpedestrian’s Link e-scooters feature a network of sensors, microprocessors and artificial intelligence that runs 1,000 vehicle health checks every second during a ride.

Bordeaux is deploying a fleet of 100 Superpedestrian’s Link e-scooters. The French port city permit limits all shared e-scooter operators to a maximum of 100 vehicles.
France becomes the sixth European country to host Superpedestrian shared fleets and riders will benefit from several promotions during the launch period, including no unlock fee and a “triple your wallet” feature.
Predictive maintenance
Superpedestrian will manage its Bordeaux fleet using 100 per cent electric vans, across a deployment area of approximately 30 sq km, which it reckons helps minimise environmental impact. The scooters also feature an artificial intelligence-based predictive maintenance system to help reduce repairs and waste and extend service life.
All riders will enjoy free unlocks until 30 October 2021. During the same period, when a rider loads €15 to their in-app wallet, Superpedestrian will contribute €30 – tripling a rider’s original contribution (when a rider loads €5, Superpedestrian adds €5; when a rider loads €10, Superpedestrian adds €15). The standard per-minute ride fee is €0.20.
The Superpedestrian service is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week. To rent a scooter, riders can search for Superpedestrian’s Link app in the Google or Apple app stores.
In July 2021, Superpedestrian, which was spun out of MIT in 2013, launched its Pedestrian Defence technology that prevents footpath riding by scooter riders in real-time, rather than just detect it. The system is currently undergoing road-testing across North America and Europe and will arrive in France in 2022.

Link features Superpedestrian’s patented vehicle intelligence (VI) system. This network of sensors, microprocessors and artificial intelligence runs 1,000 vehicle health checks every second during a ride, modifies performance to avoid component failures (such as battery fires), notifies operations teams immediately if it is not upright (tip-over detection) and removes itself from service if it detects any one of 140 safety-critical conditions (including issues with electronics, battery, motor and brakes).
Link can also store geofence maps and commands onboard the scooter and the operating system is updated remotely over-the-air. It features a 98km range battery, which claims to be three times the industry average.
