Neom to plant a million trees in regreening initiative
The living lab, built on a greenfield site in Saudi Arabia and home to The Line smart city, is also establishing a protected area and conserving 95 per cent of its region.
Neom, a region in northwest Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea being built on a greenfield site from the ground up as a living laboratory, will plant one million trees as part of a regreening initiative.
The development includes The Line smart city and Oxagon, a reimagined industrial area, as well as Trojena, a sustainable mountain tourism destination. Neom aims to improve vegetation cover across the site by rehabilitating at least 1.5 million hectares of land and contribute to the Saudi Green Initiative.
Restoration and sustainability programme
Neom is collaborating with the National Centre for Vegetation Cover and Combatting Desertification and its efforts will see the return of 100 million native trees, shrubs and grasses by 2030 to aid the restoration of degraded land and repair of wildlife habitats.
The Neom Regreening Initiative was announced at the International Exhibition & Forum for Afforestation Technologies in Riyadh, of which Neom is the main sponsor.
The event aims to support Saudi Vision 2030, the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with a focus on protecting and sustaining vegetation cover, rehabilitating degraded sites and achieving sustainable management in pastures and national parks.
“Protecting the natural landscape and ensuring the coexistence of human and natural habitats is integral to Neom’s vision,” said Nadhmi Al-Nasr, chief executive officer of Neom. “By launching the Neom Regreening Initiative in collaboration with the National Centre for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertificatiton, we are well underway to becoming a leading contributor to the conservation and preservation of one of the world’s outstanding natural environments.”
Neom said it wants to help repair the planet for current and future generations. As part of its strategy, it is establishing a protected area and conserving 95 per cent of its region and will implement “science-based protection, restoration and rewilding programmes”.
Neom is participating in the International Exhibition & Forum for Afforestation Technologies as part of its efforts to provide sustainable solutions to the most pressing global environmental challenges and aid the Kingdom in delivering its 10-billion-tree-planting initiative, Saudi Green.
At its launch, The Line smart city development committed to preserving 95 per cent of nature within Neom, “with zero cars, zero streets and zero carbon emissions”.
It will comprise carbon-positive urban developments powered by 100 per cent clean energy, providing pollution-free, healthier and more sustainable environments for residents.
