Germany plans to develop an 1,800km (1,118 miles) hydrogen energy pipeline network by 2027 as a way to pivot towards green energy sources and reduce reliance on Russian natural gas. Norwegian energy company Equinor and RWE will work together to level up Europe’s low carbon hydrogen value chain by exploring several building blocks that will contribute to Germany’s phase-out roadmap for coal and development of new hydrogen infrastructure.
The deal will also see the companies building production facilities in Norway to produce low carbon hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS) – so-called blue hydrogen.
